If you're familiar with the original Crazy Taxi, you'll notice some graphical tweaks right off the bat. The West Coast city is back with some new features. The result so far is a polished and graphically solid effort that plays quite a bit differently from the original. Rather than just port over the level from those versions of the game with some graphical enhancements, developer Hitmaker has done some work to flesh out both of those offerings for Crazy Taxi 3. The West Coast city, based in part on San Francisco, was the setting for the original Crazy Taxi and was last seen in the arcade version and subsequent Dreamcast conversion of the game, which also included a small assortment of minigames. The objectives are more varied this time though, making a much more interesting experience chase people, run away from others, escape from thugs who want to shoot you in the face and tail bad guys on their way to a "drop." It stays compelling throughout, and there are tons of extra modes (like survival, chase and even two-player modes) to ensure this is a high-value game (it even comes on two discs). In our second look at the newest installment in the Crazy Taxi series, we'll be focusing on the West Coast city, which returns from the original Crazy Taxi, as well as nine of the minigames you'll find in the Crazy X mode. Cops and bad guys are even more psychotic than before (if that's possible), and I have to say that it can get really annoying when you have to retry missions over and over because some nutjob keeps smashing you off the road. Although you don't have to prove your worth this time (hands up who hated the garage scene at the beginning of Di.one, two, yep, right, that's everyone), the levels are really tough almost right from the beginning. The whole "vibe" of the game is much grittier and more aggressive than the first, and the linear nature really helps motivate you to work through the missions. The weird, all-over-the-place mission structure has been refined into something far more linear and appropriate, and this has been matched with a more effective use of cutscenes for storytelling. Thankfully the sequel rectifies most of Driver's niggly little problems-except the slowdown, which is worse now because of the incredibly ambitious nature of the admittedly very splendid graphics.

There are also many, many cars hidden in secret locations should you be intrepid enough to find them. Whereas the first game really didn't give you much to drive with, this time around, virtually any vehicle in the game can be hijacked via a simple third-person action sequence where you run around and liberate various owners from their cars. Now the environments feel much more organic and natural.

Can you say "tag"? It may seem slightly silly, but no one really noticed that the first Driver was nothing but a series of grids and 90-degree angles. Now Driver 2 is heading home, courtesy of Infogrames, the game marks the appearance of.curved roads! Not only curved roads, but two-player action as well. The first Driver (developed by Destruction Derby masterminds, Reflections) tapped into the felonious instincts of today's video gaming youth, both in the States and abroad, where the game was a runaway success.
